The obverse shows the Thessalian sport of bull-wrestling. The Thessalian plains were famous in antiquity for their horses. Alexander the Great's own horse, Bucephalus, was originally from Thessaly. Much of the coinage of ancient Thessaly displays different scenes of horses.
