General: These types with the horseman facing left are rare. Surprisingly, Hoover\'s Handbook of Greek Coinage, appears not to to list this type. The obverse of this coin appears to be struck from the same obverse die as SNG Copenhagen 614.

Philip II of Macedon was King of Macedon and father of Alexander the Great and Philip III Arrhidaeus. The bronze series of this type is extensive and differentiated principally by the different symbols and letters which appear on the reverse and occasionally on the obverse. These symbols and letters, known as control marks, were used to identify the officials responsible for a particular issue of coinage.
